In 1954, Tiger comics introduced Roy of the Rovers, the hugely popular football based strip recounting the life of Roy Race and the team he played for, Melchester Rovers. Comics published by the British company variously known as Amalgamated Press, Fleetway Publications, Odhams Press and IPC Media. Buster was a British comic which began publication in 1960, originally published by IPC Magazines Ltd under the companies comic division Fleetway, then by Egmont UK Ltd under the same imprint until its closure in 2000.

After several years of disuse, the term "crisis" was applied to several events with either "universal" stakes or substantial character consequences, such as Zero Hour: Crisis in Time, Identity Crisis, Infinite Crisis, and Final Crisis. He worked for D. C. Thomson & Co. and IPC Magazines in a career that spanned over 30 years, on comics such as Bullet, Scorcher, Hornet, Action, Roy of the Rovers, Victor and Scoop, amongst others. He was also the first artist to draw Roy of the Rovers. Artists featured included D. C. Eyles, Mike Hubbard, Eric Parker and Septimus E. Scott.
